Julie Richey Works

Julie Richey was born in Minneapolis, MN and graduated from Robbinsdale Cooper High School.  She began making mosaics in 1990 when she founded Oggetti Marble Mosaics.  She studied art history as a Rotary Foundation Graduate Scholar at the Universita’ degli Studi di Perugia, Italy and has a BA in Art History from the University of Dallas.  Julie has studied advanced mosaic techniques under Basilica di San Marco chief mosaic conservator Maestro Giovanni Cucco and in 2005 she earned a Master in Mosaico certificate from the Orsoni mosaic workshop in Venice, Italy.

Julie teaches mosaic classes at the Creative Arts Center of Dallas and consults with designers, contractors and homeowners to create custom mosaic installations for kitchens, baths, living areas and patios.  By working in a variety of media including natural stone, ceramic, porcelain, and glass (Italian smalto, stained glass and vitreous glass), Julie is able to create site-specific artwork tailored to the client’s needs.  Each mosaic is an original, often inspired by natural elements and landscapes.

In May 2005 she fabricated a 20-foot diameter floor medallion designed by Dallas artist Judy Hearst for the new Dallas/Ft Worth Airport International Terminal D, Gate 40.  Julie is an active presenter and board member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA). She has exhibited in SAMA’s last five international juried exhibitions in Miami, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, and Mesa, AZ.

Her most recent works in the Dallas area include “Bon Rotllo – Good Friends”, a 52 ft. mosaic wall for Chic from Barcelona Restaurant in North Dallas. “Filata”, an inlaid enameled glass floor design created for the Brooke Berman Gallery adjacent to the Hotel Palomar.  A four-mosaic permanent installation at the University of Dallas featuring four views of the UD Rome Program as experienced by the Music, Sophomore Semester Aboard and School of Ministry Programs.  “Magic Carpet”, one of two commissioned public mosaics benches for the City of Bellaire, TX.

Julie’s site-specific and fine art mosaics are in more than 60 collections and private homes from Menorca, Spain to Seattle, WA.  Her work has been featured in The Dallas Morning News, Dallas Home Design Magazine, Luxe Magazine, Glass Tile Inspirations for Kitchens and Baths, and Mosaic Techniques and Traditions.  Her “Lascaux Kitchen” mosaic designs earned a 2007 Silver Style Award from Dallas Home Design Magazine for “Best Kitchen Design”.  “Lascaux” also was selected from among 1100 mosaics worldwide to be included in the premier issue of Mosaic Art Now Magazine in 2008.

Her 2006 stained glass and millefiori sculpture, “L’Ambasciatrice” (the Ambassadress) won the 2007 Mosaic Arts International Members’ Choice Award.  Most recently, “L’Ambasciatrice” and “Altocumulus” won Blue Ribbons at the Park Cities Presbyterian Church Juried Art Festival in May 2007.
