Biography
The foundation of David Herring's artistic perspective lies in his work as a painter. He received an MA and an MFA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1977 and for the ensuing 20 years he established and maintained an active studio and practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. David maintained gallery representation for those 20 years and the work was collected both publicly and privately. Several years ago he made the decision to switch mediums and has been continuously rewarded for this change of perspective. He has worked on his own work at Public Glass and San Jose State University and worked as a production artist at a number of Bay Area glass studios including Pinzette Glassworks in Berkeley. Additionally, he has participated in workshops at Haystack, Corning, Pittsburgh Glass Center, Pilchuck, and San Servelo in Venice, Italy.
Artist Statement
During the production of this body of work, I have become aware of various attitudes, perspectives and working methods that recall the processes that I used as a painter. The singular daily pursuit of a coherent group of pieces fueled the dialogue of integrating my past visual vocabulary within the framework of glass and glassmaking. With these new tools, and a respect for the nuance of the intuitive artistic moment, I have developed this work.
The surfaces are meant to be inviting. Silver foil over a background color, and powders create the base for a future sandblasted surface. The graphic interplay of the residual silver and the colored ground of the vessel’s exterior is crucial in my attempt for an individual expression.
It is my belief that a unique artistic vision can lie within the contours of the humble vessel.
